Here are some stained boats that look awesome. They're Stillwater Boats by Lewis Moore, and kits are available from him. Lewis is also a fine furniture maker, so I'm sure his stain job came out nicely -- at least it looks like it in this little picture, and he has won awards at boat shows.

I've emailed him about his kits, but have been meaning to email him about the stain he used, because I love that reddish hue. The kits include 3mm okoume panels plus the other wood pieces and you supply your own epoxy and fiberglass. Lewis recommends a layer of 6-oz. cloth on the outside and taped joints on the inside -- I think this is underbuilt, especially given that the panels are only 3mm, but they're designed for light, flatwater use. The light-colored strips you see on the insides are strips of ash veneer that cover up the taped slits in the hull panels that allow the compound bends in his designs.
