One frequent question I got at Delmarva was "how did you keep the stitching straight?" It was actually pretty easy.
Bill Low recommends heat cutting the fabric as you sew, which works great if you have a convenient stringer down the center of the deck (his boats do). With a flat deck, I didn't feel I could just cut the fabric by eye while it hung in space, so I clamped a piece of 3/4" x 1/8" x 8' aluminum strap to the stem and the center of the masik. This provided a "cutting table" and also served as a gauge for inserting the needles consistently while sewing. When the sewing reached the breasthooks (I started at the cockpit, I drew a line down either side of the stap for reference, then pulled it out and continued to the end. It was really easy and the results were quite eye pleasing.
On the aft deck, I clamped the strap to the stern plate and the back brace and did the same thing
