I scarfed 1/8" lauan 8:1 (1" wide) and tortured it into a round hull with no problem. I took extra care to prewet the joint well with epoxy. Scarfing is the only way to go. The butt block at the butt joint makes the panel too stiff at the joint and the panel will not make a smooth bend.

If you look at CLC's website (Shop Tips), they use a butt joint only on their cambered decks. Bending the deck in two pieces allows for a different deck radius front and back and installing a scarf in between would be a challenge.
