Brian, I used the Feathercraft from CLC. I must have read the instruction wrong, because I was sure it said cut the tail off. But then again this was last November and I did not keep the instructions.

I installed the rudder while building, before even paddling the boat. I was so sure that a small 'crook' in the rear would sent the kayak in circles. It turned out the boat tracks well without a rudder.

My second Chesy 18 is made out of 3mm okoume 38 lbs and no rudder. I don't miss the rudder, however, I am just an intermediate paddler so far.
