Rick,

I'm a bit hesitant to say you can/cannot use this method to steam bend your stem, I've only picked this idea up from reading books on building larger boats, where it is used for bending planks and keel timbers.

However, I think I would bend my stems using this method. You can use garbage bag plastic, or at least plastic of similar thickness, clear plastic would be better it'll let you see whats going on. For short pieces of timber you could put them all in a large plastic bag, with the opening taped around the end of your steam pipe, you'll want to have a few small holes for steam to escape. you should have a largeish bag that won't tear when you bend your wood.

Basically I think this is a good method that can be tailored to suit most applications, It just requires a bit of thought to workout how best to go about it.
