A custom fit wooden frame is nice, but a pain to make.
Two end pieces with a strap of carpet suspended between them is nice if your worried about bump damage to the hull.
For tightening down I haven't found anything to beat the cheap nylon straps with ratchets. At discount stores I can find them in blister packs of 4 for about $15.00. They've ruined me for life, as I only used rope now when forced.
