Just a thought-- you may want to try an alchohol based Analine leather dye like what tandy leather sells for use on saddles etc-- it is available in a bunch of different "Brown" tones--

I have used this on wood in the past with pretty good results-- buy a small bottle and do a test piece-- if it works the dyes are available in qt-gal sizesHope this helps a bit-- Steve
