I was going to use a thermarest pad. It was very comfortable but I soon discovered that I was almost just as comfortable using no seat at all (on my CLC Chesapeake 16). It really is perfectly comfortable....and it provides the lowest center of gravity possible. I also have no problem paddling (i.e., I'm not so low that I'm reaching over top of the gunwales to get paddle in water). For cheap seats though, one idea I had before I went seatless was a toilet seat. There is one type in particular which has nice angled sides which do not allow you to slide left or right and might be idea for kayaking. I assume they are waterproof. And speaking of drainage holes for errant water......its got it in spades.
