Yeah, I was thinking about this to. Seemed like there wasn't much point having a water proof hatch if your stuff was going to get wet anyway. Though if I could have thought of a way of flush-mounting them without anything getting wet I would have gone with it. I still think flush hatches look better, but I really want to get the damned thing in the water.

If your hatch covers are sitting on raised lips that are around the hatch. You might want to run a block plain along the edges of the hatch that are not leaking, it sounds like their a little high.

I've got some of that neoprene self adhesive weather stripping that you put around door jams to prevent draughts.

I'm sorry, I don't know what type of wood it is, I found it in my garage when I moved in, Some sort of native Australian hardwood I think. All the strips were about 2.5mm thick (guess thats about 1/8" in your language) 30 minutes steaming was plenty.
