I was just reading a Woodenboat book called "Building the Haven 12 1/2", In it they recommend using fibreglass battens for lofting, such as those used as battens in sails. They have even flex, and are very strong. It would be worth asking at your local marina/sailing club if they have any old ones they'd be prepared to part with.
