Check the Bear Mountain and Newfound wood works bbs's. I recall a thread on this subject (quite awhile ago, maybe 1 or 2 months)
Also try the canoe bbs's. I think these are used on canoes more often than kayaks. Go to Nick's "Building" site, and scroll near the bottom to the list of BBS's
I'd be inclined to build up the area with 1" or 1-1/2" wide fiberglass tape to decrease impact on appearance.
You can also get rubber or flexible plastic (like protective door trim for autos) and attach if you don't mind the way it looks. White trim can look okay (?). Let us know what you do and how well it works.
