Many sources say overall length should be as tall as you can reach with your fingers bent (as in hooked over the top of the paddle) or your handspans plus the length form fingertip to elbow. These measurements are supposed to be about the same on a native Greenlander. If your boat has a high foredeck or is wider than 22", add a little more length(up to 6"). The loom (handle) should be the width of your shoulders..grab a ruler, hold it in front of you with your elbows against your ribs, and use this measurement. Loom diameter is what you can wrap your hand around with forefinger touching ball of thumb. 1-1/2" thick, 1-1/8"tall with the edges rounded fits my hand well. The blade should be the width you can grab and hold, about 3-1/2 or at most 4" if you have big hands.
You mainly want a paddle sized for your body/boat. That way, you can grab either end to whack the gators with.
