"Would it be the same to make a "conventional" paddle... adjusted to achieve the... "Greenland" paddling style?"

If you'll let me speak through my hat, for a moment, I've been considering a Greenland paddle for a few reasons other than the "style". (Although it does look so cool.)

If you try to roll with some foam attached to your outbound paddle blade, you will find that even a little bit of extra buoyancy makes a big difference. Similarly, a bit of buoyancy prevents a misplaced blade from diving. A Greenland paddle (so I read) tends to be more buoyant. (Consider wood Euro paddles are usually coated and sometimes glassed.) The Greenland paddle is also supposed to be much easier to handle under water.

In choppy water, I sometimes have problems orienting my blade. The Greenland design I'm considering is completely symetrical, with a squarish oval shaft, so it should be much easier to position.

There's also the issue of wind resistance - it's pretty difficult to make a paddle with less wind resistance than a Greenland paddle, and the storm paddle has even less wind resistance.

My long term goal is to use my kayak in quite choppy waters (the norm around here), so I think the storm, if nothing else, will be a valuable spare paddle.

My questions, now, are: Is this all nonsense? Is this type of paddle is practical with a roomy, 24" beam kayak, and if so, how much lenth should I add to the traditional measurements? Should I be considering a Greenland kayak over a touring kayak for messy water?
