My problem is I spend half my life with a bit of money and no time, the other half with too much time and no money.

If you have tons of time, there are cheap clamp substitutes, but none of them are as nice. You don't want to use any more epoxy than you have to, but you also don't want to squeeze the epoxy out of the joint. It doesn't work like carpenter's glue - if you squeeze the joint too tight the epoxy oozes out and the joint is very weak. I found the cheap-o clamps more than adequate as long as I had a number of real clamps on hand for tricky spots.

On the other hand, if you're pressed for time, real clamps are quicker, easier, and how much time do you want to spend making the clamps?

Cutting the pipe can be hazardous. I found out quickly enough that a circular saw definitely was not the right tool. Using a hand saw and a vice, I still scratched myself up nicely. I never would have expected cutting plastic pipe to be such a pain.
