I'm a long-time wooden boat fanatic and am very familiar with "The Rudder". I have a copy of George's Kayak book and have enjoyed his writings for some time (Remember the great Mariner Catalog series?)
I suspect that the 1923 article had something to do with Max's kayak interest. It may also am intrigued with Max's (direct?)influence by L. Francis Hereshoff and L. Francis' connections with Norman Skene. Hereshoff and Skene spent many summers in Marblehead experimenting with decked canoes and kayaks.
I will have to write Geo. Putz regarding this. He, like Max did, lives in Boothbay, Me. Perhaps they knew one another.
I appreciate your response, Paul....I didn't expect much on this strand.
