Probably the best paint would be epoxy with a pigment added. This would be the most compatible. However, any good paint should be alright. I would carfully sand the paint before applying epoxy to maximize the mechanical bond. An epoxy seal coat would probably be a good idea before painting. It will make the paint behave more predictably, and when you sand the paint, the dust could stain the un-sealed wood.
