I built one this spring - took about 200 hours. The project was my second strip built boat - I built a canoe the previous winter.
The plans are very complete, and a successful project is well within the capability of anyone with just average mechnanical ability.
As far as the design goes, thats more difficult for me to judge, but in the dozen times I've used it, I've been quite satisfied. It's light, strong, and quite maneuverable.
As a first project, you could pick an easier design to build, but this one is certainly within reach of a first time builder.
PS Nick's book is very helpful, if you do go ahead with the project.
