I was fiddlin' with a scrap of shock cord about 3 ft. long. I found that if it's wrapped around a paddle handle, and stretched as it's wrapped, an extreme amount of evenly distrubuted compression can be exerted along the length of the handle. It seems to me that you could use this technique to good effect to hold your wood strips in place while twisting. The shock cord might stick to your adhesive, but some kind of layer (saran wrap?) between the wood and the shock cord might fix that.
