I ended up making a slit at the stern and then wrapping one edge around and overlapping the other. Wetting it out without the slit and then having a pair of cheap scissors to cut the wet cloth with will give you the easiest/best fit.
After applying a fill coat and then feathering the overlapped edge I applied a 4 inch and then a 3 inch wide bias cut strip to both the bow and stern. One warning - I used some 9oz tape on one of my kayaks and it showed up hazy when I was all done. I would definately use 6oz or lighter tape (or just cut strips from cloth).
There have been many discussions on whether or not to apply a sealer coat of epoxy before laying on the cloth so I won't go down that road here - except to say that I tried it both ways and personally I prefer NOT precoating as long as you are sure to use a thinner epoxy for wetting out like System Three's ClearCoat (the ClearCoat makes it much, much easier to wet out and smooth out and seems to soak into the wood better too).
