At least be sure he will float. Use a jacket that you know will float him face up and absolutely has a strap in the crotch that prevents him from sliding out. Our whole gang took our kids when they were small, but we had them in the water with the jackets on over and over, until we were sure they would float properly. And by the way, keep the youngsters in their jackets even when out of the boat. They can slip off the shore into the water and disappear in a flash.
