I'm not Mark, but I'll give ya my 1.514 cents Cdn anyway. :-)

What you want is a two way valve (if that even makes sense by the definition of the term), so that you avoid excessively high or low pressures - in the cavity - with respect to the surrounding atmosphere. That is, you want to prevent your kayak from both exploding and imploding. The main problem is to allow gas to pass, for pressure balancing, while preventing water from being drawn in when the pressure inside is lower than it is outside. The other case is obviously not a problem, as air will be expelled when the pressure inside increases beyond atmospheric pressure, and thus water is prevented from entering.

Someone please jump in here: How much air flow is required to operate the above mentioned gas mask valve? Is it possible to generate enough air flow with the normal slow heating and cooling of a kayak to properly operate it?
