Having lived more hours in a gas mask then I care to think about, I'll comment here that they take no pressure to operate. They are not spring loaded, but are just a flapper retained against the seat by shape. If they get sticky from sweat or slobber, they take a faint bit of exhalation pressure to pop open. The human can only generate something like .4psig exhailing, so by faint pressure to the human, I mean very faint pressure overall.

The first problem with this double valving is that it will allow water back in just as well air. Quicker in fact. Any water splashing aginst the valve would enter. Shielding it would protect it from splash, but any water standing against the valve would enter it. You would have to ensure the valve stays above water at all times to make it water tight. Something that isn't feasable for a kayak.

The second problem is these valves take a set, so they quit sealing in the neutral position. Just like those rubber scuppers used on power boats. They work when their brand new too, but after a few weeks to a few months, their no longer seating in the neutral position. Recommended routine maintenance on gas masks is to replace the valves every 3 months, regardless of use.
