i used probond polyurethane glue on my paddle, it is a pine closet rod 1 1/8 inch diameter , the blades are red cedar biscuit jointed and glued to the shaft. when i test broke some scaps the wood failed not the glue. you could use tung oil instead of linseed oil or you could try a water repellent like thomsons water seal they even make stains with the repellent mixed in.
