Isn't this technique only applicable to hulls with convex cross sections? I'm not saying that it can't be done on a concave hull, but it may be more trouble than it's worth. Just in case my suspicion is justified, he may want to go over the boat-to-be-copied with a straight edge (possibly excessive, as the eye is probably good enough, but if in doubt...).
