Actually, the string might be better because you can see it. For the laser, you'd need a target (like paper) for it to make a dot onto.

When I was drawing up a design for my own, I found that the strongback fit better if it (the center of the 2x4) went from the point in the stern to the point in the bow. It made it easier to taper the ends of the strongback that way. This only works if the bow and stern are not upswept (like a whitewater boat). I was able to fit a strongback (in software) all the way to the last form (12" from the bow & stern, I think. I forget the spacing now)
