"I have an experimantal Greenland type paddle that I laminated the shaft out of Fir. I'm OK with it so far, some tweaking to do on the shaft roundness and diameter (any suggestions?)."

I wanted to stay away from laminating, but now I'm questioning the wisdom of that. It's pretty hard to find a good enough piece of wood to carve a one peice paddle, at least around here. If you go to Chesapeake Light Craft's web site, you'll see a commercially made laminated paddle (link below).

The shaft dimensions are described in the articles I mentioned in my earlier posting. A rectangular shaft (example measurements can be found at http://user.itl.net/~kmansell/articles/lollysticks.html ), makes the most sense to me, but requires a thicker piece of wood.

"Maybe it's blasphemy... putting a 90 degree feather in..."

My reading indicates there was actually a great variety of styles among traditional paddles, including feathered. I would think the sliding stroke would get pretty complicated with a feathered blade, and a round shaft would be required, but one article described a Greenland paddle that had warped to a feather and the author said it worked fine.
