How to get padding off?

I have custom outfitted my boat for the first time. I am now making a few modifications which require removing some of the foam which was applied with some of the auto store adhesive (one of the reccomended 3M products). I pulled the seat back off with considerable effort (it was glued to rear bulkhead) and actually pulled off some epoxy and a few chips of outer veneer. In other spots I left unsightly clumps of foam. So the good thing is I now feel very confident that my foam will hold in place when rolling etc., but I would like to know if there is a technique or product which makes removal go a bit easier.
Thanks, Dave
