With motorcycles, there is no verbal communication, regardless of proximity. So we use hand signals. Works just fine, once the parties arrive at a standard for the meanings. You could go with various radios, but I personally don't like them. Part of what I like about things like motorcycles and kayaks is the lack of speaking.
