I believe it originated out of the "skunk works" of one of the left coast kayak surfing gurus. I have used my Pyranha Acro 270 very successfully in 5-6 foot surf in Daytona Beach. The Acro 270 has a double concave hull resulting in extra lift especially when it gets hauling. The hull is loose and responsive and the hard chine holds an edge pretty well. The others mentioned (Necky Rip and Jive) as well as any of the new generation of flat bottomed freestyle whitewater hulls will work well. But, the Alamax was made for just one thing, shredding ocean waves. Happy Hunting. Reggie
