I would second the sloppiness of Tevas. I would almost have more of a concern with them getting caught in the foot-pedals than laces. I have worn wetsuit booties without much trouble. There are some new water/kayak shoes that are beginning to hit the market. The Akonas look pretty nice, but cost around $70. I think they have laces, but can't remember if there is some flap or other cover.
