Stan, here in Maine the water is cold enough year-round to warrant neoprene booties. I have a pair I like very much that I purchased at LL Bean for $28. They have substantial heel and toe protection as well as a sole that is durable enough to deal with barnacles, broken glass, etc. They also fit snugly enough not to cause anxiety about getting caught in the footpegs.
