My brother used paper-backed veneers to make inlays for our boats. He just taped them together on the backs, and we just left the tape on and dropped it in the pool of waiting epoxy. We used a few strips on the top of the veneer to keep corners down--as you noticed, they do curl. I then used Nick's plastic wrap method to hold it down until it cured.
