I've used a propane blowtorch with a flame fan attachment (usually used for stripping paint) and had good results. It really knocks down the fuzz on both linear and crosslinked PE , but I have not tried to fill any deep gouges (no material was added) I've heard that P-tek sticks used for repairing skiis work well for filler.
Dagger boats uses the blowtorch method for final smoothing of their production boats after they pop them out of the mold. IMHO sanding is a waste of time.
