I know there are different theories about this, but I find the big globs of glue easier to remove than the thin smears left after wiping of drips. A scraper will knock off the drips and it will be quite obvious that they are gone. It takes a lot more effort to remove the skim of glue remaining after wiping and it is difficult to see whether you have removed it all.
I know Norm Abrams always wipes off excess glue, but I was taught to leave drips until they dry.
The down side of leaving drips is they can pull up a divot when you scrape them off.
