I built a S&G Chesapeake 17. I left the copper wires in. From about 2', you can see the wires/holes. From as little as 4' away, you see nothing but wood grain. If you pull the wires as Pygmy advocates, I'd bet the holes would be hard to notice at 2-3' (of course you'll know they're there, but a builder can always spot his own flaws when others cannot)
I tried to use duct tape instead of ring nails for holding down the deck on my boat. It doesn't really stick all that well--stitching your boat with wire will cause you a lot fewer headaches in the long run.
