In Response To: Material: To Okoume or not to Okoume (Jordan)
My main question is it is hard to find Okoume
: here in New Orleans or anywhere close. What would be the drawbacks if I
: were to use fir marine grade plywood if my final plan is to glass and
: paint the final project?
: Thanks

Jordan,
I don't know of a source in Baton Rouge. I've built kayaks using 1/8" meranti and 1/4" lauan. The 1/8" meranti was purchased from Hogan Hardwoods in BR at less than $5. Is there a HH in NO? Riverside Lumber in NO carries fir, marine ply, but I wouldn't use it. By the way, the meranti and lauan appear to be the same stuff.
