Hi, Steve
I have always used the towing hooks located on the undercarriage of my car ('91 Honda) for bow/stern lines. I use heavy duty bungee cords with stainless steel hooks for the ties. Webbing ties would work, too. Most cars have something on the undercarriage that can be used for such purposes. If your roof rack provides for such wide spread suppost then I figure you can safely get away with a double tie down for each bar and tie down for the bow only. Those bars, if securely attached, are very secure. In the city I do not use a bow line because the bars on my roof rack are so secure (basic Thule rack). I use a bow line only when I take the car on the highway and then I use two tie downs for extra security. I should mention that I use bungies to tie down my kayaks, always a double tie down for each bar or bow line, just in case a bungie lets go.
