John,
I'm not sure if this is what you have in mind? I added a day hatch to a customers boat which is accesible from the deck in front of the cockpit. It was intended to hold his watch, wallet and keys and any other small item so he could get at it quickly (stopping to replenish beer supply). I have written some info at the link below. I have not completed the info nor posted it to my web site, but your query encouraged me to pull it out and get to finishing it.

Maybe it will give you another idea. Hope it helps.
