: There are a couple of issues with this idea. Silicone is virtually worthless
: for bonding anything that's under any stress. It's best for sealing
: bathtubs and sinks. On top of that, the polyethylene container shown would
: be very difficult to bond to, anyway. That's why plastic kayaks don't have
: parts glued to them, but rather welded or mechanically fastened. There are
: now industrial adhesives that will bond to polyethylene, but they're hard
: to find and very expensive. You'd be best off to find a container of a
: different material.

Brian you are quite right that silicone won’t hold to the plastic container as I tried a test yesterday. The reason I thought it might is when I put in a couple of Becket hatch lids on my first kayak the instructions said the plastic rim material would only stick with silicone and that is what I used on them, without any machanical fasternets. What did stick was contact cement on the plastic material I am using now. Today I am going to put silicone on top of the contact cement and see if I have a good firm grip. I would suppose I could build up contact cement to a thickness and just use it alone, or put an extra coat of contact cement around the edge of the wood strips and the plastic container lip for an extra measure after the strips and container lip are already fastened in some fashion. A fall back would be to rivet it on and seal it with contact cement. A Velcro safety strap or bungee cord over the plastic lid might hold the lid on in a high stress situation.
