Ebay is a wonderful place to look for tools and you should be able to locate a very nice block plane for $30. I got a spoke shave that was in very good condition for just 25 bucks. Such a deal! I am sure the modern, high end planes are very nice but old iron and wood feels so nice in the hand.
Wood working stores are a hazard to the checking account. So much beautiful wood, so many neat tools and such nice people.
New tools or old, you will need to keep them sharp. Putting an edge back on the plane irons and chisels is good therapy and a great way to relax after a stressful evening of boat building. I suggest water stones but other methods work very well.
Happy shopping and building
Mark
: hmmm..i think i'll scout out ebay.
