In Response To: Tools: Decent band saw for under US$250? (Bob May)

: Floppy tables, belt tensioners incapable of actually developing tension, etc.

Enter the contrarian :)... I use a band saw I bought for $10 at a yard sale. I use a table saw to rip, a scroll saw to cut detail and the POS band saw for everything in between. All were bought off price or second hand.

On a boat, miter cuts are normally compound miters and too complex to go through the process of setting up a fine tool; it is easier to do a rough cut and then refine with a hand plane - especially when you're working in soft wood. But I will admit, my processes are sometimes slow and cumbersome.

I think the upgrade to a "professional" tool is prohibative so I'd rather make do with what's available. I love a new tool as much as (or more than) anyone but, I learned early on to never mistake a nice tool kit for craftsmanship. I've said it before: don't buy it - get a gift for your wife - that will take you a lot further toward your goal than a brand new band saw :D That's my opinion anyway.

Good luck with the project. Keep us posted on your progress.
