I taped a strip of cardboard to the base of the stapler just behind the staple exit slot. This prevents the gun from inserting the staples flush to the wood so there is no wood damage and the staples are easy to pull out. I use a screwdriver with a bent tip (used vise & hammer) and it has tape wrapped the bend to protect the wood when I pry out the staples.
