Most of the WRC I use is picked out of fencing wood piles at Home Depot, Lowe's, or McCoy's. Almost all of it is rough, or what they call wood grain, on one side...which leaves me with a rough edge on each strip. I don't worry about it at all because I plane all the edges doing a rolling bevel anyway. Just something peaceful and satisfying about using a sharp block plane to plane strips.
