"Vectra" or "Vectran"?
In Response To: Strip: Xynole or Vectra (Dan Lindberg)
The former is a moldable plastic, whereas the latter is a liquid crystal polymer fiber fiber. Vectran is very strong, but I don't recall it being touted as particularly abrasion resistant, but it is abrasive. When used in cordage, steps must be taken to prevent it from abrading itself when flexed under tension. Lubrication of the fibers or comingling other fibers to serve as a buffer are a couple of options. I have no idea how it would work as an abrasive layer, but it will definitely change the color of a boat, as it's naturally a straw color, similar to Kevlar. I believe it's more or less opaque, too.
