I'd look at selective applications of lighter glass where the wear is greatest than a wholesale application of a cloth that soaks up lots of resin. Or just spend the big bucks and put down a 'football' of 6oz s-glass on the bottom of the hull. Part of what you get putting down a stiff outer skin is resistance to damaging the wood. Fabrics with relatively poor compressive strengh and good tensile strength will provide a "keep it in one piece" characteristic but not keep the wood from being dinged as well as glass,,s-glass has better abrasion characteristics than regular e-glass, in general glass is easier to do hand layups with minimal wet-out compared to the synthetic cloths whereas those cloths shine in vacuum layups. I made a Coho with two layers of 4oz s-glass on the bottom 'football' with one layer everywhere else. After a few years of heavy use i found impact damage through the hull where there was only one layer of 4oz on both sides with exterior dings causing whitening of fibers on the inside. On the bottom where most of the real impacts occured (rentals, trips)with a loaded kayak there was two layers of 4oz on the inside and outside. There was no interior whitening of the fibers from impacts and the various long scraping impacts did have some go through the second layer of 4oz s-glass but not the first.
I could imagine a football area with 10-12oz of s-glass would be mighty tough,,if you need more than that and you should be more careful where you paddle. Methinks anything that would scour through a couple layers of 4oz s-glass would be laying in deep, deep gouges in rotomolded kayaks or going right through the thickest gel coat and into the roving glass on a glass kayak.
