just ideas,,what's the kayak it's going on? how about rebuilding the stern so that the rudder is recessed in a slot of the stern so the wheel is semi tucked away,,the rudder could fold into a recess on the deck about 2" deep. I haven't done it but basically the idea is that if you picked the kayak up by the bow the split stern would hit the ground or depending on the shape of the stern some kind of guard above the rudder. making this up as I go along.
