if you use the common 'pinhead' type rudder but one that has some distance betw the pin and the rudder rotator like shown on vaclav's site below (and further up the thread), there would be space for it to fit in yr existing hole and still miss the stern and also retract. it's just a matter of the lateral distance betw the pin and the front of the deployed blade.
