My recommendation is to base the cockpit size based on what you like/need. Either make your own spray skirt or order a custom sized skirt from one of several manufacturers. (I used Seals and they were great to work with and did not charge anything extra). All I had to do was send them a tracing of the cockpit combing, tell them how many inches forward of the aft edge of the opening I was sitting, the height above the combing any back band would protrude and in 14 days I had a perfect fitting spray skirt (I ordered a cockpit cover while I was at it.) For my Outer Island I also specified a smaller than standard bungie since I made the clearance on my combing a little small. My Outer Island opening is very small and I could not find anything locally that worked right.

I made my Great Auk cockpit huge. My 69 year old mother (knee problems) can get in with no problems. Good Luck.
