: I'm planning on milling my own strips and I know nothing about routers. Do
: regular routers allow for extending the bit up through the bottom of a
: homemade router table, or do I need to buy a plunge router?

: Also, how many horsepower do I need to get? I can get a 1 hp plunge router
: for $39.99 or a 3 hp for $79.99. I probably wouldn't use it much at all
: except for building this boat, so I'd like to go with the cheaper one if I
: can.

: Thanks.
I'm onto my third router now the latest is a cheap job has more features than any that I've owned, has a 12 month waranty so I'm thrashing it, when it dies I'll put it with the other ones and get another cheapo one. Here in New Zealand I've found it easier to cut all my strips square and cut a rolling bevel. It was a task that seemed more dificult than it actually was and after only a few hours it was a piece of the proverbial to get a good job done. Small bevel plane and keep it very sharp. I'd rather do it this way than spend my relaxation time in the shed (NZ male's place of refuge and sanity) with a screaming machine. I had to make up a number of clip thingies to keep the strips aligned with each other whilst the glue set up. For me kayak/boat building is as much about the journey as the destination. When this one is done I might be lucky enough to find fault with it and get to build another. Put the money into a better sander, for what it's worth. Good luck.
