In Response To: S&G: My kayak weighs a ton. Why? (Patrick, Kentucky)
My husband built an experimental rolling boat last summer, using 1/4 luan. Despite being a very low volume boat (18' X 18.75", 4.5" rear deck), it is very heavy. We noticed that even before glassing, the hull seemed heavy. 1"4" Luan is the chief culprit. On the other hand, he backed the boat into an oak tree while on the rack, and it has been backed into by a trailer truck with only minor injuries - it is a tank. I built a boat of similar size using 4 mm okume for the hull and 3 mm for the deck. It weighs 30 lbs. A friend also built a small volume rolling boat out of luan doorskin (1/8") and it is about 30 lbs. The 1/4" luan is just too heavy.
